We placed 14th (2 positions short of the $10,000 prize) out of 5,630 causes. We were the smallest cause in the top 20. And we managed to raise $30,000. Our cause went from having 200 members to over 1,000. Thanks again for making this our most successful online fundraising effort yet. If you live in the area we are heading out to celebrate and we would love it if you would join us.

All of you that helped with America’s Giving Challenge, please join us for food and drinks. We’ll be there from 4:30-6:30. But we have 38 hours left, and I need to get you guys motivated and donating. I am a coach, I love winning. Right now I am trying to figure out how to get people to donate so that we can win $10,000. I hate what this competition has done to me. I wake up in the middle of the night trying to come up with ideas on getting you to donate. Some days as I am checking the standings I start yelling at the computer. “Why would anyone want to save Chinese Children?” “Animal Rescue who needs that?” “and what does Clay Aiken and his National Inclusion Project really do?”
How am I expected to compete against a country that has a population of 1.3 billion or causes that have over 100,000 members when we only have 952?
But the thing is, we need this, as much as anyone does. On any other day I would give to some of these organizations, but today it’s about us. Today out of any day is the day that you need to show your support.

Me and the Fugees with a message to all of you.

Coach Luma Mufleh and the Fugees Family to receive Common Ground...

Coach Luma Mufleh and the Fugees Family to receive Common Ground Award.

Dear Smithies,

I have always loved the family and home that Smith was and still is for me.

I am humbled this year to be a recipient of the Rally Day Medal for the work I’ve been doing with the Fugees Family, an organization I co-founded. I am writing to you as a fellow Smithie because we need your help.

We are competing in America’s Giving Challenge, an on-line fundraising challenge where the Facebook Cause with the biggest number of donations (not total raised) at 3:00 on November 6th wins $50,000. Every day there is a daily challenge worth $1,000. We’re currently in 7th place for the $50,000 prize awarded on November 6th to the Cause with the most donations.

My strongest allegiance is to Smith (after the Fugees!) and I need to know that my alma mater is behind me. Right now, from 3pm today until 3pm on Thursday, October 22nd, it’s TEAM SMITH day. If every Smithie who reads this e-mail will donate $10 and share this with other alumnae, we will win $1,000 and may jump to first place in the standings.

If you can donate $10: please donate today, join the Cause, and forward this message to as many other Smithies as you can!
If you can donate $20 - $100: please donate $10 today, and $10 on subsequent days to be counted as a unique donor each time.
If you are a member of Facebook: please post the Giving Challenge in your profile and spread the word.

Here’s the link (you can donate even if you’re not on Facebook):
Donate to the Fugees Family Cause!

You can check our Facebook Cause page at any time to see how we’re doing.

In the name of Mountain Day, Rally Day, Julia Child & Gloria Steinem, Friday afternoon teas and late-night hours spent together in our houses talking about everything and nothing, I ask you to show up and give, and show everyone the strong, extensive and supportive Smith network that we have always had.

Thanks for your help!

Luma Mufleh ‘97, Capen House

p.s. I had the kids that came out to scrimmage, as I observed and coached from the sidelines. During this scrimmage, I noticed a child who was not playing his position. I wanted to get his attention, but I did not know his name, as he was one of 30 new kids on the field. I tried to get his attention but did not succeed. Finally, I asked another kid if he knew the other kid’s name. “Oh that’s One Shoe,” he replied. “One Shoe?” I said, puzzled by the response. “Yeah, One Shoe!” I shook my head confused as I looked down at “One Shoe’s” feet, then noticing that he was wearing one oversized black sneaker on his left foot, his kicking foot. His other foot was bare.

I continued to watch “One Shoe” play; he didn’t have a care in the world, playing on the soccer field, laughing and fooling around with the other kids. We ended practice an hour later. “One Shoe” came off the field, took off his sneaker, wiped it down carefully, putting in his backpack. He then put on his flip-flops preparing himself to walk two miles home. Before he left, he turned and said, “See you tomorrow Coach.” “See you tomorrow, One Shoe,” I said to myself. Ever since that day, I have seen “One Shoe” at least four days a week. He has expressed to me that “soccer is (his) life” and that the “Fugees are (his) family.” He has made me realize that it can take so little to make someone happy.

a game of pick up soccer

a game of pick up soccer

A new video from fugees family

A new video from fugees family

Munda, after walking three miles in the freezing snow.

Munda, after walking three miles in the freezing snow.

Birthday

Yesterday I celebrated my 34th birthday. I had just returned Friday night from a week’s worth of meetings and conferences in Chicago. A first for me, I had never before spent more than an overnight trip away from the kids during the season. For the most part it went well, other than the kids trying to convince the substitute coach that they run for 7 minutes each practice (instead of 30). There was a celebration planned for Sunday afternoon, but unfortunately Atlanta experienced a snowstorm, and we had 2 inches of snow. A few kids convinced their parents to bring them by early. Paul and Somaili showed up at 11am for the 4pm party. They ended up being amongst the few who could make it over once it started snowing. We made snowmen together, fun for all of us. Later on, Mahamud and Mahamed stopped by, with pink plastic flowers, a card, and their dad who enjoyed the fire we had going. Paula showed up with five of her six children and we all enjoyed chocolate cake and homemade pizza. I was just starting to realize how much I had missed the kids, being gone all week, when at 6:30pm I saw some movement outside the window. I opened the door and there was Munda, a ten-year-old from Sierra Leone. He had walked three miles in the freezing snow in his best dress clothes and shoes to hand-deliver a birthday card. There are few things that overwhelm me. Last night I was overwhelmed.

Photo

Season's Greetings

Two years ago, around this time, I had a boy who didn’t believe in Santa. In fact, he didn’t know who Santa was.

“Coach is Santa real?” he asked.
“Yes, Santa is real,” I replied.
“How come I have never seen him before?” he questioned.
“Well, he comes when you can’t see him, when you are sleeping, and when you’ve been good.” I answered.
“Maybe he just doesn’t come to Africa,” he decided.

Later that week this little Fugee, barely 12 years old, called and asked if we could go see Santa, claiming that some of his friends at school had seen him.

His 17-year-old brother joined us, teasing him the entire drive, saying that Santa was not real. They were arguing as we walked into the mall. Suddenly the little Fugee saw Santa. He gasped and grabbed onto my leg.

“He’s real coach, he’s real.”

We got in line to talk to Santa and the little Fugee proclaimed to his brother, “I told you he’s real.” I expected a smart response back, but there was only silence as the older brother stared at Santa for a few minutes. Then a smile formed and he nodded his head. “He is real.”

The little Fugee then sat on Santa’s lap and asked for his Christmas gifts. I went up to Santa when he was finished and asked him for the Fugee’s list hoping that I could get him something from his list. Santa looked at me and said, “He asked for a jacket for his brother, who now believes in Santa. He asked for a small toy for himself, because he knows I don’t like PlayStations. And a new job for his mother, so that she could spend more time at home.”

It was the second time that week that this boy left me at a loss for words.

In the holiday season we sometimes forget that Santa lives in the spirit of giving, that there are those with less than what we have, and that Santa can be real for our kids.
